Many clients have asked us about claiming travel insurance premiums through their navancorp private health spending account. Like most questions related to matters of taxation, the most popular answer is it depends!
If your travel insurance coverage is strictly for unexpected medical/dental/health expenses while travelling, then the answer is a resounding yes.
If your travel insurance includes things like trip cancellation, baggage delay/loss, trip interruption, etc., then the answer is no.
We recommend to clients that they purchase medical/dental/health travel insurance when planning on hitting the road, claiming the full amount of the premium through their PHSP. Many credit cards include trip cancellation insurance and the like, so lean on this “free” coverage, augmenting it with more traditional medical/dental/health travel insurance.
If you would like to be referred to a travel insurance provider, navancorp would be happy to provide you with a couple of known providers who have good track records of success and customer service.
